Small Teeth (Microdontia) Definition, Reason, Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention
Understanding
Small Teeth(Microdontia) is a condition in which teeth are smaller than normal. Microdontia is more common in permanent teeth than in primary teeth. In addition, abnormalities in these teeth are also more common in women than men.
Symptoms
In terms of size, the crowns of teeth that have microdontia appear smaller than normal sizes. These dental crowns are generally shorter than normal.
Microdontia teeth can be conical or the same as normal teeth, but smaller.
Microdontia can occur in all teeth or involve only a single tooth. However, microdontia can also occur on a single tooth as a whole, on the crown of the tooth only, or on the root only.
Reason
Usually, cases of microdontia that occur in all teeth are associated with radiation or chemotherapy treatment during the developmental stage of the teeth. Meanwhile, microdontia that gathers in one area of the tooth is thought to be caused by mutations in certain genes.
Small Teeth(Microdontia) is also associated with stunted bone growth and fanconi anemia. This disorder can coexist with other diseases, such as chromosomal abnormalities or ectodermal dysplasia syndrome. In addition, microdontia is often found in cleft lip disorders.
Diagnosis
Microdontia can be identified by carrying out a clinical examination, namely by looking directly at the condition of the teeth. In addition, radiographs can also be done to see the shape of the teeth involved.
Treatment
Treatment of microdontia is usually done by improving the shape and size of the teeth. For example fillings using a filling material that matches the color of the tooth, or placing an artificial crown (crown).
Microdontia treatment can also be done at the same time as braces treatment. This is useful for closing the space between the teeth if needed. Consult with a dentist to get the appropriate treatment, especially if your teeth include microdontia.
