Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla, Atlántico, Colombia. Shakira is the only child of Nidya del Carmen Ripoll Torrado and William Mebarak Chadid of Lebanese origin. He has eight older half-siblings – four sons and four daughters from his father’s previous marriage. She started belly dancing at the age of 15. Shakira means “grateful” in Arabic. This is the feminine form of the name Shakir.
