Neil Patrick Harris was born on June 15, 1973 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. His parents, Sheila Gail and Ronald Gene Harris were lawyers and ran a restaurant. Neil began his education in his hometown at La Cueva High School. Since he started acting quite early, he spent most of school as a private student. He completed his studies in 1991 with high honors.
FILM CAREER
Neil began his career as a child actor and was discovered by playwright Mark Medoff at an acting camp in La Cruces, New Mexico. Medoff later offered her a role in the drama Clara’s Heart, based on Joseph Olshan’s novel of the same name. In the film, he played alongside Whoopi Goldberg, and this was the work that launched his career. For his role in the film, he received his first Golden Globe nomination, which unfortunately he could not exchange for an award. Also in 1988, he had a role in the sci-fi comedy Purple People Eater.
He got his first adult film role at the age of 22 in Animal Room, in which he played a drug-addicted teenager. Her film partner was Matthew Lillard, who most people know from the Scooby-Doo movies. From then on, his film career took off and we saw him in works such as The Next Best Thing, Undercover Brother and Starship Trooper.
In 2004, he had a role in Harold and Kumar’s Go to White Castle. His portrayal was so defining that he later played a key role in the Harold and Kumar films. During his career, he lent his voice to several animated films, including Justice League: The New Frontier, Cloudly with a Chance of Meatballs (the second part of which he lent his voice to), Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore and Batman: Under the Red Hood.
In 2010, he appeared in the film The Best and the Brightest opposite Bonnie Somerville as the main character, and in 2011 he was seen in The Beastly alongside Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer. The comedy The Smurfs was also released in 2011, in which he portrayed the character of Patrick Winslow. The second part of the film was released two years later, in 2013. In 2014, he appeared in the works Hogyan rohanj a veszTEDbe and Holtodiglan, in the latter we saw him alongside Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.
In 2017, we could meet him alongside Matt Damon in the film Downsizing, and after that, he retired from the world of films and was mostly seen in television shows. In 2021, he showed off his talent in new films. He played the adult Jake Doyle in the movie 8-Bit Christmas and also appeared in The Matrix: Resurrection. In 2022, we saw him in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent alongside Nicolas Cage as Richard Fink. He is currently working on his film titled Anita with Ashley Judd, but there is no concrete information about the release yet.
TELEVISION CAREER
His first series role was in 1988 in the ABC series Doogie Howser. In the series, the main character, Dr. Douglas Howser, was modeled. The series was canceled by the channel after four seasons. After that, Neil appeared in several series as a guest star. Finally, in 2005, he landed the role of Barney Stinson in the new CBS series HIMYM. The series ran with great success until 2014, after which the channel finally decided to cancel it.
Until 2017, Neil only took on minor roles, then he got the role of Count Olaf in the series A flood of bad luck, which was released by Netflix. After three seasons and 25 episodes, this series also ended, which was not a big surprise, since the service provider is famous for canceling its series after 2-3 seasons. Over the years, he has taken on several guest roles. In 2022, we saw him in the new Netflix series Uncoupled in the role of Michael.
STAGE CAREER
Neil is not only known for his film and series work, as he can boast not only People’s Choice and Emmy awards, but also a Tony award, during which an actor’s stage talent is rewarded. He started acting in plays in 1997. In 1998, he showed his talent in the play Romeo and Juliet, and in 2001 he played in the play Sweeney Todd, where he also showed his singing talent.
Over the years, he has appeared in theater plays such as Proof, Cabaret, Assassins, All My Sons, and Amadeus. In 2014, he received his first Tony Award for his performance in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
MUSIC CAREER
Neil is a versatile person, in addition to his film, serial and acting career, he did not neglect music either, releasing only five albums of live recordings. His singing talent was also heard in the series HIMYM and Glee.
PRIVATE LIFE
Neil proudly admits that he is homosexual, despite that he has dated women. Between 1997 and 1998, he was in a relationship with actress Christine Taylor, who is now Ben Stiller’s wife. According to Patrick, this relationship opened his eyes to the fact that he was attracted to his own sex. In 2004, she met her current partner, David Burtka, and two years later, in 2006, she poured clean water into the glass and accepted her difference to the world.
After 10 years of living together, they decided that it was time to seal their relationship and said the happy yes to each other. The couple also have two children who are twins and who were born by a surrogate mother. Gideon Scott and Harper Grace were born on October 12, 2010.
Neil and her husband David support several organizations including the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Children International, Feeding America, Global Green, Stand Up To Cancer and The Trevor Project.
