Measuring for curtain fittings may seem difficult, but it’s actually quite easy to do. This article provides simple instructions on how to take measurements, whether for installing curtains inside or outside window frames.
1. Measuring for Mounting Curtains Inside Window Frames
1. Make sure to measure accurately.
If the window is installed in a deep recess, try fitting the curtains into it for a neat finish later. Because, after all, an error in measurement can mess things up.
2. Measure the width.
Measure the width of the niche in three different sections, namely at the top, middle and bottom. Make sure you hold both ends of the tape measure against the “inner” edges of the recess. Take note of the “smallest” measurement, as this will be the measurement you will use later.
3. Measure the height.
Measure the height of the window alcove three times, namely on the left, center, and right. Make sure you hold both ends of the tape measure against the “inner” edges of the recess. Take note of the “longest” measurement, as this will be the measurement you will use later.
2. Measuring for Mounting Curtains Outside Window Frames
1. Determine where the curtains will be installed later.
The curtains should be installed 3.8 to 7.6 cm above the window (frame).
2. Measure the height.
Measure from the selected point as the location from the top of the frame down 5 – 10 cm down to the bottom of the window frame. The advantages of the overlap are to block out sunlight and ensure privacy.
3. Measure the width.
For the width of each curtain type, carefully measure the width of the window (width of the frame from edge to edge) and add about 5 and 10 centimeters on each side.
