Hip Pain Definition, Reason, Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention
Understanding
Hip pain is one of the common symptoms experienced by adults with osteoarthritis. Symptoms of hip pain caused by osteoarthritis occur due to:
- Inflammation around and in the tissues of the hip joint
- Damage to the cartilage of the hip joint
- There are osteophytes (bony protrusions) at the ends of the hip joint
Pelvic pain will usually get better or go away on its own. However, you should seek help if your pelvic pain exhibits any of the following symptoms:
- Pain persists after resting for about a week
- Fever body
- Pain on both sides of the hip and other joints
- Pain from a serious accident
- Your feet are deformed, have bruises, or are bleeding
- You can’t move your pelvis or bear weight with your feet
Symptom
Pelvic problems can cause symptoms of pain or discomfort in:
- Thigh
- Inner hip joint
- Groin
- Outer hip joint
- Butt
To find out the root cause of pelvic pain, information about accompanying symptoms is needed. For example, in osteoarthritis, a person will experience symptoms such as pain, stiffness, and difficulty doing daily activities.
In the case of a hip fracture, there will be a change in the shape of the hip joint. Meanwhile, if the source of the problem is an infection, symptoms of fever will appear.
Reason
Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of hip pain. Other causes include:
- Hip fracture or fracture
- Osteomyelitis, an infection of the bone
- Septic arthritis, an infection in the joints
- Hip dysplasia, malformed hip joint
- Osteonecrosis decreased blood circulation to the hip joint
- Bursitis, inflammation and swelling of the bursa of the hip joint
- Hamstring muscle injury
- Inflammation of the ligaments in the thigh
Diagnosis
Doctors will diagnose pelvic pain from the history and physical examination. The causes of pelvic pain symptoms can be sought by knowing the accompanying symptoms.
Other tests such as laboratory tests and radiology photos can be done to find out the problem behind the pelvic pain.
Treatment
Usually, pelvic pain will decrease or go away on its own. Several ways to reduce pelvic pain can be attempted. Both with the use of drugs or other methods, such as:
- Reducing weight in those who are overweight
- Avoid activities that make the pain worse, such as running
- Wearing flat shoes
- Avoid standing too long
- Doing exercise strengthens the muscles
- Using painkillers such as ibuprofen, paracetamol
If your hip pain is caused by sports or other strenuous activities, you should:
- Stop the sport or activity
- Always warm up and stretch before and after exercising
- Do low-intensity sports like swimming and cycling instead of running
- Run on soft ground like grass or damp ground
- Make sure you use special shoes for running
Prevention
Osteoarthritis that causes hip pain can be prevented by making lifestyle changes to be healthier, such as maintaining an ideal body weight and exercising regularly.
