Ganglion cysts are lumps that often appear around the joints and tendons on the hands and feet. Most often appears on the wrist and finger joints.
These health problems usually appear at the age of 20-60 years. In addition, women are known to experience more ganglion cyst disorders.
The taboo for ganglion cysts is heavy lifting. So, people with ganglion cysts should reduce strenuous activities using their hands.
Symptom
Symptoms of a ganglion cyst are lumps that change in size from 1-3 cm. This lump is soft and immovable.
Reason
The exact cause of ganglion cysts is not known. However, some sources say that ganglion cysts are caused by excessive use of joints such as weight lifters, waiters, and musicians (especially bass players). The cyst that forms contain the same fluid as joint fluid.
Diagnosis
Detection of ganglion cysts is by carrying out a physical examination to see directly the lump that occurs. Most ganglion cysts can be passed by light when shone a flashlight.
Treatment
In most cases, cysts will disappear on their own with time. In small cysts that don’t cause any symptoms and don’t need to take any action.
For aesthetic reasons, there are several ways to get rid of these cysts, namely by:
- Surgical operation by directly slashing the skin above it and then removing the cyst. Cyst recurrence can be prevented by not moving the joint where the cyst is located for 1-2 weeks.
- Aspiration (aspiration). However, this method has a recurrence rate of 50%.
- Arthroscopy. The technique is carried out by inserting a tool such as a small pair of binoculars in the joint to see the entire cyst, then lifting it. After this technique, the patient is free to move the joint.
