Chlamydia Definition, Reason, Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention

Understanding

Chlamydia is a type of sexually transmitted disease that is quite common and often encountered. This disease can infect both men and women. Even though it is a type of health problem that is easy to overcome, don’t underestimate chlamydia. If left unchecked and not treated thoroughly, this disorder can damage the female reproductive system in the form of pelvic inflammatory disease which makes it difficult to get pregnant in the future.

Chlamydia can also cause an ectopic pregnancy or a pregnancy outside the uterus which can be fatal. In addition, chlamydia that is not treated properly has the risk of causing premature birth and eye infections that can cause blindness and pneumonia in newborns.

Diagnosis

Doctors can determine the diagnosis of this sexually transmitted disease from the symptoms it causes. Although at first there may be no significant symptoms. Therefore the doctor will carry out laboratory tests to confirm chlamydia infection.

The sample used is urine or fluid from the vagina or penis. Usually, if someone is diagnosed with this disease, then their sexual partner also needs to be examined immediately.

Reason

The spread of chlamydia bacterial infection is mostly through unprotected and unprotected sexual intercourse, both vaginal, anal and oral. This infection can also be spread to the baby during delivery.

Be careful if you’ve been infected before because it doesn’t mean someone will have antibodies. Conversely, this type of infection can also recur.

Symptoms

Most people infected with chlamydia have no significant symptoms. Even though there are no specific symptoms, the infection is still dangerous and can damage the reproductive system.

Symptoms that usually occur in women include:

  • abnormal vaginal discharge
  • burning or pain when urinating (BAK)
  • pain during menstruation
  • bleeding between menstrual cycles
  • abdominal pain and fever
  • pain during intercourse
  • itching or burning in or around the vagina

Symptoms in men usually include:

  • clear or slightly cloudy discharge from the penis
  • pain when urinating
  • burning and itching sensation at the tip of the penis
  • pain and swelling in one or both scrotum

Other symptoms can also appear in the rectum (the area at the end of the large intestine before the anus) if those infected with chlamydia have anal sex. Symptoms can include pain in the anus, discharge, or bleeding from the anus.

Treatment

Sexually transmitted diseases due to chlamydia can be treated with appropriate treatment. The doctor will give antibiotics such as azithromycin or doxycycline. The use of this drug needs to be supervised by a doctor.

It is important to take the drug regularly until it runs out to be completely free from this bacterial infection and avoid complications. Severe infections may require hospitalization for intravenous antibiotics.

Prevention

To prevent transmission of chlamydia, whoever you are, it’s a good idea to wear protection when having intercourse. Especially if someone is classified as at risk or has had a chlamydia infection. Avoid having sex while you are infected and are undergoing treatment.

Make sure you are completely healed, before having the next intimate relationship. If necessary, you can do a laboratory test first. For the safety of your sexual partner, as well as your own safety.
