Definition

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. Typically, sufferers of this type of headache will feel pain and pressure on the back of the head, right and left of the forehead, neck, and behind the eyeballs.

Tension headaches are divided into 2 groups, namely:

  • Episodic tension headaches. This is a headache condition where the sufferer will feel constant pain that is mild to moderate.

    Headaches can be short (about 30 minutes) or long (days). Episodic tension headaches generally develop gradually and are more common during the day.

  • Chronic tension headaches. Usually, chronic tension headaches are described as a throbbing pain that attacks the top, front, and both sides of the head. The pain can go away and come over a long period of time.

Tension Headaches Symptoms

The most common symptoms of tension headaches are:

  • Mild to moderate headache
  • Disturbed concentration
  • Get angry easily
  • Muscle ache
  • Sensitive to light
  • Feel tired
  • Hard to sleep

Tension Headaches Reason

Until now, the exact cause of tension headaches is not known. However, several things are suspected as triggers. For example fatigue, lack of sleep, wrong body position at work, irregular eating patterns, discontinuation of caffeine consumption, and hunger.

Apart from these things, stress is one of the triggers that is most often associated. Usually, tension headaches that arise during the day or evening, are also associated with work problems.

Diagnosis

Determining the diagnosis of tension headaches or tension headaches can be done through a series of interviews and physical examinations. When conducting a series of interviews, the doctor will ask about the underlying psychological factors and symptoms of headaches (location and frequency, and pain).

Tension Headaches Treatment

Tension headaches or tension headaches are generally not considered a serious and dangerous illness. Handling can be done in several ways, such as:

  • Live a healthier lifestyle, such as managing your diet and exercising.
