Gemination Definition, Reason, Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention
Understanding
Gemination is a form of abnormality in the teeth, where one tooth germ is divided into two. This is due to the incomplete separation process during tooth development. So, when seen, the crown of the tooth appears to be split but has one tooth root.
This disorder can occur in milk teeth as well as permanent teeth. In the Caucasian race, it is more often found in milk teeth. Teeth that experience gemiation will have abnormalities in shape, size as well as structure, and permanent teeth are usually found in incisors.
Symptom
The patient has detected gemination when the crown of the tooth looks wider than normal teeth, with a depression in the middle of the crown. The shape is elongated from the top of the crown to the neck of the crown of the tooth, with a normal number of teeth.
Reason
Dental abnormalities such as gemination is a hereditary diseases. So, when a family member is affected by gemination, it is likely that their offspring will also be affected.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis can be made through examination at the hospital. To distinguish gemination from fusion, you can do this by counting the number of teeth. If the number of teeth is not less than the normal number, then the disorder is gemination. Usually, the dentist will examine the inside of the tooth to see the condition of the pulp chamber, where there are root canals.
Complications
In people with gemination, aesthetic problems will usually arise in the teeth. Because the arrangement of the teeth is irregular, the dental arches are asymmetrical, which interferes with the growth of the teeth next to them.
In this condition, the teeth will also appear more spaced and prone to cavities. This in the future will cause difficulties for the patient when going to do dental treatment.
Treatment
In tackling cases of gemination, it is necessary to involve dentists from various concentrations. The actions that later need to be taken can also vary, depending on the location and extent. For the treatment of teeth affected by gemination, this can be done by filling teeth to regular dental care, including tooth extraction.
Apart from that, treatment can also be done by means of silen fissures, namely preventing dental caries by reshaping the teeth and filling asymmetrical areas with certain materials so that the teeth become more resistant to dental caries attacks. This is often found in molars which have an important role when we eat, namely smoothing food so that it can be swallowed.
