Cutaneous Larva Migrans Definition, Reason, Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention

Understanding

Cutaneous larva migrans is a dermatosis (a disorder of the skin) caused by worm infection. This disease is also known as creeping eruptions.

This disease can attack anyone. However, generally this condition is more often experienced by children because of their habit of playing outdoors.

Reason

Cutaneous larva migrans disease is caused by the larvae of the hookworm species Ancylostoma braziliense and canine. Transmission generally occurs when a person walks barefoot in an area contaminated with these worms. Worm contamination can be found in animal feces – such as cat, dog or horse feces.

Diagnosis

Determining the diagnosis of cutaneous larva migrans can be done by asking about symptoms through medical interviews and direct examination of skin wounds. However, the process of determining the diagnosis is sometimes difficult because the symptoms resemble those of other skin diseases – such as dermatitis and scabies.

Some of the supporting examinations that can be carried out include:

  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT), which is useful for identifying the type of parasite on the skin surface
  • Biopsy, to determine the risk of inflammation in the skin layers

Symptom

In some cases of cutaneous larva migrans, the symptoms that appear can be so mild that the sufferer doesn’t notice them. However, generally the signs that will appear are:

  • on the skin, there is a reddish and winding line, due to the passage of worm larvae in the skin
  • itchy skin
  • mild swelling may occur
  • common locations are the feet and buttocks, but any area of skin they come into contact with can become infected

Treatment

Cutaneous larva migrans generally heal on its own but take 5–6 weeks. Sufferers should be given symptomatic treatment to treat the itching symptoms that occur.

Consumption of deworming drugs can be done according to the doctor’s recommendation.

Prevention

Cutaneous larva migrans usually occur accidentally. However, prevention efforts can be done by:

  • Avoid direct skin contact with soil. For example by always wearing footwear every time you do activities, especially outdoors.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the body after each activity, especially if the activity is carried out outdoors.
