Stye(Sty) Definition, Reason, Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention
The definition of a stye, or in the medical world known as a hordeolum, is a painful lump on the eyelid (upper or lower).

The definition of a stye , or in the medical world known as a hordeolum, is a painful lump on the eyelid (upper or lower). Lumps filled with pus can be found on the inside or outside of the eyelids. Stye occurs due to an infection in the glands in the eyelids.
Avoid holding – especially breaking stye. Doing so will only make the infection spread further. However, you can clean your eyelids with an antiseptic liquid.
Until your stye heals, avoid using makeup on your eyes. You should also hold off on using contact lenses until the stye has completely healed.
In stye, the complications that will occur are as follows:
- Palpebral cellulitis
Is inflammation inside the eye, to be precise in front of the orbital septum, namely the area that surrounds the eyeball. - Palpebral abscess
Abnormalities of the eyelids with signs of infection, pain, and eye redness.
Stye Reason
Styes are caused by infection with Staphylococcus bacteria in the oil glands on the eyelids. Styes are usually associated with hygiene problems in the eye area.
Stye Symptoms
Symptoms of a stye that arise is in the form of a lump on the upper or lower eyelid. It can appear on the inside or outside of the eyelids. This lump is painful, and makes the eyelids swollen and red.
The eyes may become watery, feel stuffy, and be sensitive to light. If the swelling is severe, the patient may have difficulty opening his eyes.
Stye Diagnosis
The diagnosis of a stye can be made by a doctor only by carrying out a physical examination of the patient’s eyes. No additional examination is required for this.
Stye Treatment
To deal with stye, you can compress your eyes with warm compresses, four times a day for ten minutes. This compress will help pus to come out more easily.
Avoid holding or rubbing your eyes. Always wash your hands before touching the skin around the eyes. Be careful with the use of cosmetics, especially around the eyes. Avoid sharing eye cosmetics with other people.
Always clean cosmetics in your eye area before going to bed. If you use contact lenses, make sure you clean them well. Do not wear contact lenses while sleeping and always wash your hands before touching contact lenses.
