Ian Joseph Somerhalder was born and raised in Covington, Louisiana on December 8, 1978. His mother, Edna, is a massage therapist, and his father, Robert Somerhalder, is a construction contractor. The middle child, he has an older brother, Robert, who works as a carpenter and a younger sister, Robyn, who is a journalist. He was 13 years old when his parents divorced. He stayed with his mother.
