Rashes in newborn babies are very common but can be very frustrating for parents, most are harmless and go away without any treatment.
What are some common baby skin rashes seen in newborn babies?
Contact Rash:
This can be due to touching, kissing or contact of the baby’s skin with non-cotton, synthetic clothes.
Newborn acne:
These pink pimples appear on the face, mostly due to exposure to the mother’s hormones during pregnancy. These occur from several weeks to months and do not require any treatment.
Erythema toxicum
This is a common red rash that can be seen in newborn babies. In some children, it is also white and yellow in color. These rashes are mostly seen after birth. They last for a few hours and a few days and with time Disappear.
Milia
These are small white spots visible on the face and nose. These are caused by clogged oil glands. When these oil glands open, these spots disappear.
Mongolian spots
These are dark brown or blue birthmarks that are often mistaken for injuries and are found on the back and buttocks. These become lighter by the second birthday and are found in children of Asian, African and Hispanic origin.
Salmon Patch
These are called bee stork bites or angel kisses. Well, salmon patches are nothing but appear only due to hormones which fade after a few weeks or months.
Prickly heat
These rashes mostly appear as small red spots and spread most commonly on the neck, nappy area and armpits. The best treatment is to keep these areas dry and make babies wear loose cotton clothes.
